Reason Enough For Me
“(Your first name)!” A voice calls, it sounds oddly familiar….who is it? “(Your first name)!” Right. Koenma. No doubt he has another job for you.
You open up your cell phone and see Koenma’s face on the screen. How did I guess?
“Yeah Junior?” Koenma changes into his teen form.
“Shut it, (your last name)! I’ve got a mission for you.” He glares at you and you glare back in the cell phone.
“What? The worlds run out of water? The Kakai barrier break again?” You smirk, you love to annoy Koenma and you two have quite a history together. Don’t know what I’m on about? Well let’s find out….
*&*&*&*&----Two Years Ago----&*&*&*&*
“(Your first name)! Don’t! (Your first name)! Come on, (your first name) don’t do this! Please…don’t!” An anguished voice called out to you.
“You all betrayed me! EXPLAIN THAT! HOW COULD YOU? Why shouldn’t I jump? I’ve got no reason not to!” You yelled back from the top of the bridge.
Your family, friends and boyfriend had all betrayed you. They had promised they’d stick with you through your whole life and then they turned their backs on you. You had to go through hell; they’d made your life a living hell. Now they were begging for you not to jump. Talk about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide!
“THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR ME HERE! DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND? YOU MADE MY LIFE A LIVING HELL AND NOW YOU WISH FOR ME TO STAY ON EARTH?” You screamed to them. Them being your mother, father and boyfriend.
“WE HAD NO CHOICE! We weren’t in control –” Your father started.
“BULLnuts! You had every chance in the world to make it up, but did you? NO!” You screamed as your feet edged closer to the edge of the bridge.
“(Your first name)!” Your mother screamed.
You ignored the desperate pleas coming from your ex-family as you took the last step you’d ever take….
*&*&*&*&*&----Two Hours Later----&*&*&*&*&
“So lemme get this straight – I’m a spirit?” You asked pointedly to a small toddler.
“That’s correct.” Koenma answered.
“Well can you hurry up and sentence me to hell or where ever – I’d like to get on with eternity.” You replied, still a bit miffed that suicide hadn’t ended it all. You’d never been religious, you’d always thought that there was nothing before nor after the life you let on earth and that dying would end it all. Okay screw miffed, you were down right ticked, which would explain you trying to kill Botan when she found you.
“What makes you think you’re going to hell?” Koenma asked you.
“Well I killed myself, there’s a sure indicator!” You said tactlessly.
“Look, before I do anything, I’ve got a few questions. Botan please leave.”
“Yes sir!” The blue haired girl replied and zoomed out of the room.
“(Your first name), why did you commit suicide?” Koenma asked.
“I was betrayed.” You answered monotonously.
“Were you? Or were you tricked?”
“What are you talking about?” You demanded.
“Recently, (your first name), the Kakai barrier – it separates the demon and human worlds – had a few holes made in it. We’ve now fixed that but before, small demons, demons called mesmerians were able to go through the holes in the barrier. They are able to take control of human beings – controlling their bodies and hypnotizing their minds. Your family was taken over by these demons and so betrayed you as you put it. It was their choice as I believe they were trying to tell you before you jumped off that bridge.” Koenma explained.
You dropped to your knees. Your hands fall to the floor in front of you and you bowed you head, hyperventilating starts as you hold back tears, “you’re…you’re…”
“I’m serious. I’m sorry, (your first name).” Koenma stated and you could hear the sympathy in his voice.
“Please. I don’t wish for any sympathy.” You said in a monotonous voice.
“Alright, well, as of now these are your options, since you can’t very well be in limbo for a few hundred years…well you can, but it wouldn’t be pretty.” Koenma’s voice rang out.
“Okay. Keep talking.” You said, your tone has not changed any. You are now on your feet, and your expression is as cold as ice.
“Alright, you can A) Become a lone spirit detective. I have a team but they don’t need another member. You’d just handle the little stuff. Or B) Become a substitute grim reaper (Botan’s been needing a break). Well?” Koenma asked.
“What was that thing about limbo you mentioned?” You asked as you watch Koenma sweatdrop and he sighs in exasperation. The inner you smirked at having annoyed the Prince of the Spirit World, though your physical appearance does not change.
“I refuse to send you into limbo for the next six hundred years (your full name).” Koenma stated to you.
“Explanation of why?” You questioned him.
“That would be like six hundred years of torture multiplied by one thousand two hundred. I refuse to put you through that, of all people!”
You glared daggers at him, “I don’t even want to know why. The other options don’t sound too pretty though. How about option A? I don’t like the idea of having to go tell people they’re dead. What does this ‘spirit detective’ term mean anyways?”
“A spirit detective is someone who will take care of demonic problems and keep the human world safe. I have a team that handles the bigger things, but Yusuke is getting a bit sick of these ‘miniature missions’ (his words not mine) I keep sending him on. Such as a B-class demon terrorizing small villages on the outskirts of Japan. Of course you will need to be trained.” Koenma explained as you continued to glare at him. That seven hundred and twenty thousand years in limbo was sounding pretty good right about now.
“What? Training is necessary!” Koenma looked shocked at the thought of you being another Hiei.
“Why can’t I take choice C? That seven hundred and twenty thousand years in limbo is sounding pretty good right about now.” You exclaimed, letting a bit of annoyance slip into your monotonous tone.
“That seven hundred and twenty thousand years in limbo is NOT an option. I refuse.” Koenma crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared right back at you.
“The glare might actually scare someone if you lost the pacifier.” You stated with a smirk on your face.
“Koenma, sir, there’s some more paper work here…” A girl with bright blue hair entered the room and trailed off as she watched you and Koenma glare at each other. “Did I miss something?” Her perky voice irritated you.
“No, Botan, you didn’t, just put the paper work on my desk.” Koenma stated, annoyance is clear in his voice, as is exasperation.
“Botan, right?” You asked, as the girl turns to leave.
“Yes, that’s right. What is it?” She asked in her ever perky tone.
“Can you explain to me why Junior here won’t send me to limbo even if I ask politely?” You asked her as she covered her mouth.
“Limbo? Why ever would you want to do that? It’s a horrid place!”
“It’s what I deserve. Why won’t he send me there? Is it against the rules?” You questioned demandingly.
“No, it’s not – he’s in charge of sentencing people, he has the final say. What did you do?” She asked as the smile disperses from her face. Obviously she was expecting something extremely horrible.
“Committed suicide because my family made my life hell and they were possessed when they did it. I found that out just now. Therefore, because I killed myself and blamed my family before I did so, I deserve torture. Now, he is refusing my request – does he do this to everyone?” You asked.
“Suicide? That minor and you want a torture sentence? Well, every other person who has asked has been granted it after an assessment has been made. Koenma, sir, why won’t you grant her request?” Botan asked, her perky tone has returned.
